Profile:

I first became fascinated with mosaics during a visit to Sicily when I saw the 3500 square meters of mosaics on the floors of the Villa del Casale, in Piazza Armerina which date from between 330 and 360 AD. They are largely intact and I was struck by the fact that they had survived for so long and by the artistry involved in their creation.

I was hooked and it was not long before I had decided to engage in this art myself.

It is immensely satisfying to work with the materials of mosaic – glass and ceramic tiles, marble, smalti and stone - and I derive great pleasure from handling them and from cutting the small pieces into even smaller pieces and from shaping them to fit.

I enjoy working with traditional materials and methods as I learned to do in Ravenna , working with Luciana Notturni. Materials such as marble and smalti, cut in the traditional way with a hammer and hardie and laid first in a temporary bed of lime putty before transferring to a more permanent bed of cement.

More contemporary techniques involve working with glass and ceramic tiles, or other “found” materials, applying the tesserae directly to the base using one of a variety of adhesives. Sonia King, like Luciana a famous and successful exponent of the art of mosaic, was my tutor when developing my skills in these areas.

Now I have a studio and am able to work on pieces of all sizes.
